installing a brand new fenceWhatever the kind of fencing you've got or will have, its important that the fence carries through its main duty of keeping your dog included. To that end, I advocate a six-foot high fence. Obviously, not all dogs need a six-foot fence. Our fence at our present residence in Maryland is just four feet high. But if we were to adopt a dog who'd high jump proclivities, wed be in serious trouble. If I were installing a brand new temporary fence for dogs, it'd be six feet, for sure.
Dogs escape from fenced lawns because they can, and frequently because theyre left alone in them for long intervals while owners are sleeping or away at work. They get bored and alone and determine to go looking for something to do, or someone to be with. If you've got a dog who jumps your fence, lifting the height in little increments is an excellent way to educate him to leap higher and higher thus the advantage of installing a six-foot fence in the first place, as an alternative to beginning at 3 or 4 feet and lifting it slowly. If you've got a super-athlete who can jump a six-foot fence, you are able to slow him down by putting bushes or putting something solid and hefty at his takeoff point so he cant collect himself correctly to leap. (This roof may also confound a jumper, who'll have a harder time discovering the fence height with the add-on.) Or it is possible to attach coyote rollers along the top of the fence pieces of PVC conduit hung on wires that may whirl when he attempts to catch the top of the fence to pull himself over. It's possible for you to assemble these rollers yourself, or buy them commercially. Our fence is old and one of these days well need to replace it, but until then, we're diligent about checking for loose planks and defective gates. I guess the first groundhog hole he locates keeps him happily and completely taken until hes summoned home. When we lived in Monterey, we'd a Pomeranian who could squeeze under our privacy fence. A row of concrete blocks lining the interior of the fence prevented his attempts, but it wasnt quite appealing. If your dog is a digger, make a note to hide your fence at least six inches. One last suggestion on keeping your dog included: make sure theres nothing next to the fence your dog can use as an escape guide. The top of a doghouse or a solidly stacked woodpile can make a superb springboard; move them far from the fence. Make sure you install your fence far enough away from any trees or other forever fixed things that may aid and abet your possible escapee. |
